Long-term radiation effects on fibre Bragg grating temperature sensors in a low flux nuclear reactor

چکیده
Fibre Bragg grating (FBG) temperature sensors have already shown short-term radiation tolerance in nuclear environments. However, the effect of long-term irradiation needed to be investigated. We therefore characterized multiplexed FBG temperature sensors inserted early 2000 in an irradiation channel of a low flux nuclear reactor. After 50 months, we show that the sensors still operate satisfactorily and that the measured drift is lower than 3 ◦C.

Long-term temperature monitoring in a low flux nuclear reactor using fiber Bragg grating sensors
Multiplexed FBG temperature sensors are used to measure a temperature profile inside an irradiation channel of a low flux nuclear reactor. After 40 months, we show that the sensors still operate satisfactorily. The measured drift is lower than 3 ◦C.

In-core temperature measurement is a critical issue for the safe operation of nuclear reactors. Classical thermocouples require shielded connections and are known to drift under high neutron fluence. As an alternative, we propose to take advantage of the multiplexing capabilities of...

The future International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is a complex installation that will require permanent monitoring and frequent maintenance operations. The high-gamma dose rates, the high neutron fluence and other radiological hazards call for the use of remotehandled equipment. The management of heavy umbilicals connecting the control systems with the remote tools is therefore...

A suite of optical fibre sensors for structural condition monitoring
This paper is to review the research activities at City University London in the development of a range of fibre Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensors, including strain, temperature, relative humidity, vibration and acoustic sensors, with an aim to meet the increasing demands from industry for structural condition monitoring. As a result, arrays of optical fibre sensors have been instrumented into ...
